Decoding an HVAC serial number is the only way to verify the unit's actual age, which is critical for warranty claims and CapEx planning. Most modern brands (Carrier, Rheem, Goodman) use a variant of the "Week-Year" or "Year-Month" format. For example, a Carrier serial starting with 1415 means the unit was built in the 14th week of 2015. Use the brand-specific guide below to find your system's manufacturing date.
Why HVAC Decoding Matters in 2026
Central HVAC systems average a 15-20 year lifespan. However, with the R-454B transition fully in effect, systems manufactured before January 1, 2025, are now "legacy" units. Knowing the precise month and year of manufacture allows you to determine if your unit is still under its 10-year parts warranty and whether it uses the phased-out R-410A refrigerant.
Carrier / Bryant / Payne
Carrier uses a highly consistent 10-character serial format. The first four digits are the key:
- Digits 1–2: Week of manufacture (01–52)
- Digits 3–4: Year of manufacture
Example: 4218G10234 = 42nd week of 2018.
Trane / American Standard
Trane's format shifted in 2002. For modern units, the first digit is a letter representing the year, but the most reliable way is to look for the 9-digit serial where the first digit is the year code (using a complex alpha-cycle) or the newer 10-digit format where the first two digits are the year.
Rheem / Ruud
Rheem serial numbers typically contain the date in the middle of the string. Look for a 4-digit block following a letter:
Example: W081612345 = 08th week of 2016.
Goodman / Amana
Goodman uses a simple 10-digit numeric format. The first four digits tell the story:
- Digits 1–2: Year of manufacture
- Digits 3–4: Month of manufacture
Example: 1905123456 = May 2019.
The R-454B Connection
If your serial number decodes to 2024 or earlier, your system likely uses R-410A. While this refrigerant is still available for service, its price has spiked 300% since the AIM Act manufacturing cutoff. If your unit is older than 12 years (decoded via serial) and needs a major repair, the high cost of R-410A makes replacement a much stronger financial option.
