What a GE Serial Number Actually Encodes

You're staring at a sticker with a serial like HR123456 and wondering how old that refrigerator is. The answer is in the first two characters — nowhere else.

A standard GE serial number contains two letters followed by six digits. The two-letter prefix is the complete date code: month in position 1, year in position 2. The six trailing digits are a sequential production counter for that month — they identify your specific unit but carry zero date information.

This is meaningfully different from other major brands. Whirlpool encodes week-of-year, not month, and positions its date code differently depending on whether the serial is 9 or 10 digits. Samsung buries its date code in positions 8–9 of a 15-character serial. GE's front-loaded, two-character system is one of the simplest to decode once you know the alphabet — which is where most guides go wrong.

The format has been in use since approximately 1970, surviving every ownership change including Haier's 2016 acquisition of GE Appliances for $5.6 billion.

The Two-Letter System — and the Trick That Trips People Up

The core rule: letter 1 = month, letter 2 = year. Both draw from the same 12-letter alphabet. GE omits B, C, E, I, J, K, N, O, P, Q, U, W, X, and Y entirely — leaving exactly 12 usable letters, one for each month and cycling the same 12 for years on a 12-year repeat.

The 12-year repeat is the catch. The letter R means 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008, or 2020. Most working appliances fall within a 24-year window, narrowing the candidates to two. We cover how to resolve the ambiguity in the Common Mistakes section.

The other trip-up: because both month and year use the same 12-letter set, it's tempting to mix them up. The order is always month first, year second, no exceptions. A serial starting with RL is August (R) of a year coded L — not the other way around.

The GE Month Code Chart

The 12 month letters map sequentially to January through December. The gaps (no B, C, E…) exist to avoid characters that look like digits on worn labels — I could be misread as 1, O as 0.

The year code is character 2. The 12-letter cycle anchors to 1970 (L) and advances one letter per year, repeating after 12 years. The chart below shows the full range of years you'll encounter in the field:

Worked Examples

Example 1 — GE top-freezer refrigerator: Serial HR123456

• Character 1: H → May
• Character 2: R → 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008, or 2020
• Context: The unit has an LED interior light and a digital temperature display — features GE began adding across the lineup post-2012. Manufactured: May 2020.

Example 2 — GE Profile dishwasher: Serial ZT678901

• Character 1: Z → December
• Character 2: T → 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010, or 2022
• Context: The buyer found the matching model in a retailer listing from late 2021; model introductions precede manufacture by 6–18 months, placing this unit at the 2022 entry. Manufactured: December 2022.

Example 3 — Hotpoint dryer: Serial AL345678

• Character 1: A → January
• Character 2: L → 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, or 2018
• Context: Unit uses electromechanical timer dials and an incandescent drum light — consistent with pre-2010 design. Previous owner confirms "bought it new around 2006." Manufactured: January 2006.

Example 4 — Café wall oven: Serial DA987654

• Character 1: D → February
• Character 2: A → 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013, or 2025
• Context: Café launched as a distinct premium line in 2018. This serial is on a Café-branded unit, meaning the earliest possible year is 2018 — making February 2025 the only plausible match.

Where to Find the Serial Number by Appliance Type

GE places the model/serial label in appliance-specific locations. It is always a white or silver sticker with a barcode; the serial (SN or S/N) appears below the code in small print. GE Appliances also maintains an official model and serial number locator with photos.

Common Decoding Mistakes

• Reversing month and year: Month is always character 1, year is always character 2. A serial starting with RL means August (R) of a year coded L — never reversed.
• Applying Whirlpool rules to a GE: Whirlpool encodes week-of-year in a different position. The two systems are completely incompatible — confirm the brand before decoding. See our Whirlpool guide for comparison.
• Not resolving the 12-year ambiguity: The fastest resolution paths are: (1) owner's manual cover date, (2) model introduction date on geappliances.com, (3) feature/styling era. ApplianceIQ's serial decoder resolves decade context automatically using the model number.
• Reading worn labels: GE excludes I and O specifically because they look like 1 and 0. If you see what appears to be an I or O in position 1 or 2, you're reading a digit, not a date letter — the label may be damaged. Try the alternate label location for your appliance type.
• Assuming post-2016 Haier units use a different format: They don't. The format survived the acquisition unchanged.
