How to Decode an LG Appliance Serial Number (The Year-Month Format Explained)
LG appliance serials begin with three numerical characters: the first is the last digit of the year (so a serial starting "5..." was made in 2005, 2015, or 2025 — context-dependent), and the next two digits are the two-digit month (01–12). Because LG omits the decade, you must use the model number, factory code, or physical condition to lock the decade. This is the one rule everyone gets wrong.
The LG Three-Character Date Prefix
LG major appliances encode the manufacturing date in the first three characters of the serial number:
- Character 1: Last digit of the year (0–9)
- Characters 2–3: Two-digit month (01–12)
Example: Serial starting 603 = year ending in 6 + March. Could be March 2006, March 2016, or March 2026.
Why the Decade Is Missing
LG's encoding system was designed in an era when appliance lifespans meant a 10-year repeat cycle was considered sufficient. In practice, it means every LG serial number is genuinely ambiguous without additional context — a serial starting "503" is factually valid for March 2005, March 2015, or March 2025.
This is not a gap in the documentation; it is a structural feature of LG's encoding. Every guide that gives you a single year for an LG serial without explaining decade disambiguation is giving you incomplete information.
Four Ways to Resolve the Decade
- Model number design year: LG model numbers often contain a suffix letter or number that corresponds to the model year. For example, DLEX7600WE — the "WE" suffix and "7600" series places this in the 2016–2018 range.
- Factory code letters (positions 4–5): KW = Korea Changwon plant (dominant 2000–2016); PN = China; newer 2020+ US-assembled units may show different codes.
- Physical condition and styling: LG's design language changed significantly between decades. A front-load washer from 2006 has different styling cues than one from 2016.
- ApplianceIQ: Our decoder cross-references model + serial to resolve decade automatically using the model series database.
Worked Examples
Example 1 — Front-load washer: Serial 603TAGH22222
- Characters 1–3: 6, 03 = year digit 6, month March
- Characters 4–5: TA = factory code (Korea, Changwon, older variant)
- Model WM2016CW introduced ~2006: March 2006.
Example 2 — Dryer DLEX7600WE: Serial 603KWWZ73713
- Characters 1–3: 6, 03 = year digit 6, month March
- Characters 4–5: KW = Korea Changwon (2016 era plant code)
- Model design year 2016: March 2016.
Factory Code Letters (Positions 4–5)
| Code | Factory | Era |
|---|---|---|
| KW | Changwon, South Korea | Dominant 2000–2018 |
| PN | China (Nanjing or Shenyang) | 2008–present |
| VW | USA (Clarksville, TN) | 2019–present (washers) |
LG By Category — Where to Find the Label
