How to Decode an LG Appliance Serial Number (Year + Month Guide)

What an LG Serial Number Actually Encodes

Every LG major home appliance — refrigerators, front-load and top-load washers, dryers, dishwashers, ranges, wall ovens, and split HVAC systems — uses a consistent 12-character serial number. Unlike GE, which uses letter codes for both month and year, or Whirlpool, which pairs a year letter with a production week number, LG encodes its manufacturing date purely with digits: the last single digit of the year and a zero-padded two-digit month.

The remaining nine characters (positions 4–12) encode the manufacturing plant and a sequential production unit number. LG does not publish a complete public factory-code key, so those positions are primarily useful to LG's internal service systems and authorized repair technicians.

One important caveat up front: this format is specific to LG major appliances — not LG TVs, monitors, or mobile devices, which follow a completely different serial convention. If you're trying to date an LG television, this guide does not apply.

The 3-Digit Date Code: Position by Position

Strip everything after position 3 and you have your manufacture date code. Here's what each position encodes:

The critical detail: LG stores only the last digit of the year — not the full four-digit year. A "6" could be 1996, 2006, 2016, or 2026. LG appliances were not widely sold in North America before 1998, so a "6" almost certainly means 2006, 2016, or 2026. Full Month Number Chart

LG uses straightforward numeric months — no letter codes to memorize. Positions 2 and 3 together form a two-digit zero-padded month code.

Unlike Whirlpool's week-based system — which requires a separate week-to-approximate-date conversion — LG's month-based system is immediately readable. A serial starting 908 was manufactured in August; no additional lookup is needed for the month component.

Resolving the Decade Ambiguity

This is where most DIY serial lookups go wrong. Every LG year digit has at least two plausible decade interpretations for appliances currently in service. Here's the systematic approach to lock the decade:

1. Cross-reference the model number's product generation

LG model numbers embed product-line generation codes. If you can determine when a specific model line was introduced — for example, LG's InstaView Door-in-Door refrigerators launched in 2016, and LG's TurboWash 360 platform launched in 2020 — then the serial year digit resolves immediately. A model that didn't exist until 2016 cannot have a serial from 2006.

2. Use design era as a visual cue

LG's control panels changed markedly around 2013–2016 when ThinQ connectivity and flat-panel digital displays became standard. Appliances with physical dial controls and segmented LCD readouts are consistent with pre-2013 production. Flat touch-panel interfaces with Wi-Fi / ThinQ logos are almost certainly post-2015. The 2020+ generation added AI-driven diagnostics and app-sync indicators.

3. Apply the North American market entry floor

LG began selling appliances in the US in 1997–1998. Any digit "8" or "9" in a modern LG lineup is therefore 2018/2019 or 2008/2009 — not 1998/1999 — for the vast majority of units still in service. For digits 0–7, the 2000s floor applies as the baseline unless the appliance is clearly pre-2000s vintage.

4. Use the factory code letters (positions 4–5) as a secondary signal

While LG hasn't published a complete key, the field-documented factory codes are consistent with specific production eras. KW (Changwon, South Korea) was dominant from approximately 2000 through 2018. VW indicates a US-assembled unit from LG's Clarksville, Tennessee facility, which opened in 2019 — so any VW serial must be 2019 or later. PN codes are associated with China production (Nanjing/Shenyang), primarily 2008 onward.

Where to Find the LG Serial Number Label

LG places its data plate in different locations depending on appliance type. Here are the confirmed positions from LG's own support documentation:

Field tip for inspectors and repair technicians: LG data plates are silver with black text and a barcode. If the label has been painted over or removed — common in rental units — look for a secondary barcode sticker on the back panel or inside the kickplate at the lower front. • Position 1: 7 → year digit = 7
• Positions 2–3: 06 → June
• Decade check: LG InstaView Door-in-Door refrigerators launched in 2016. This model line didn't exist in 2007. Year digit "7" resolves to 2017.
• Result: manufactured June 2017. Nine years old — solidly within the expected 14–17 year lifespan for this refrigerator class. Compressor and sealed-system components still under a potential 10-year warranty window.

Example 3 — LG TurboWash washer (VW factory code)

Serial: 008VWAB56789 (illustrative)

• Position 1: 0 → year digit = 0
• Positions 2–3: 08 → August
• Positions 4–5: VW → LG Clarksville, TN (opened 2019)
• Decade check: VW factory codes did not exist before 2019, so year "0" must be 2020.
• Result: manufactured August 2020. Approximately 6 years old — well within expected lifespan; any repair is almost certainly economically justified.
