GE Refrigerators

GE produces more refrigerator configurations than any other appliance category: French door, side-by-side, top-freezer, bottom-freezer, and built-in or counter-depth variants. Label placement is consistent within configuration type.

French-door models (GFE, GNE, PFE, PYE, CFE, CYE series)

Open the left-hand door of a French-door model. On the upper-left interior wall of the fresh food compartment — the wall you see immediately when the door swings open, near the top below the first shelf bracket — you will find a white or silver adhesive rating plate. This is the most common location on GFE28, GFE26, PFE28, and CYE22 series.

If the upper-left wall label is absent or unreadable, check the upper-right interior wall as a secondary location (some models flip the placement), then the door jamb on the hinge side. On counter-depth models (GNE27, GYE18), the label occasionally appears on the ceiling of the fresh food compartment when the interior walls are too narrow.

Side-by-side models (GSS, PSS, CSS, HSS series)

Side-by-side GE refrigerators have a distinct label placement from French-door models: on current units (post-1992), the label is typically on the floor of the fresh food section — you may need to remove both crisper drawers to see it lying flat. If not there, check the inner wall near the crisper drawer level (left or right side) or the ceiling of the fresh food compartment toward the front. On older side-by-side models (pre-1992), the label was on the lower right corner just above the kickgrille or on the inner left wall near the top.

The crisper-floor placement is the most commonly missed location on GE side-by-sides — owners assume the label must be visible from standing position and never check under the drawers. Pull both drawers out completely before concluding the label is absent.

Top-freezer models (GTS, GTH, GTE, HTS, RTS Hotpoint)

Top-freezer GE refrigerators are the most common GE refrigerator type in US homes and have a slightly different placement convention. Open the refrigerator door and look behind the crisper drawers — pull both drawers fully out and check the rear wall behind them, or the divider rail between the two drawer slots. This is the most common label location on GTS and GTH series built after 2010.

On older top-freezer models (2000–2010) and Hotpoint counterparts, the label migrated to the door jamb on the left side — the edge of the frame visible when the refrigerator door is fully open. A third location unique to top-freezer models: the left interior wall near the top, visible immediately when you open the door.

Bottom-freezer models (GBE, GDE)

Open the refrigerator door (upper section) and look at the upper-left or upper-right interior wall. On GBE21 and GDE21 series, the label tends to be on the right. If not there, check the inside of the freezer drawer — open the bottom freezer completely and look at the ceiling of the freezer cavity or at the back wall. Bottom-freezer models occasionally place a secondary label inside the freezer since it's exposed to more stable temperature conditions that preserve the label ink longer.

GE Dishwashers

GE dishwasher model number placement differs from most other brands in one important way: the label is not on the door itself — it's on the interior tub wall.

Open the dishwasher door completely (pull it down to fully horizontal). Turn your attention to the left side wall of the tub interior — the tall vertical wall you see on the left when looking into the open dishwasher compartment. The rating plate is affixed to this left tub wall at approximately mid-height, facing you when the door is down. This applies to GDT, GDF, PDT, and CDT series dishwashers (GE, GE Profile, and GE Café) as confirmed by GE Appliances official support documentation.

If the left tub wall label is absent or unreadable, check the right tub wall as a secondary location. A third location, common on older GE dishwashers, is the inside of the door panel itself — on the door's interior face near the lower edge. Mineral residue and hard-water splash degrade dishwasher labels faster than on any other appliance; if the label appears blank, photograph it with a phone and boost the contrast before assuming it's unreadable.

GE Washers

GE's front-load and top-load washers use different label locations — a detail that frequently trips up repair techs who work primarily on one type.

Front-load washers (GFW series, PFW Profile)

Open the washer door. GE places the label on the door frame ring — the circular border of metal or rubber-trimmed plastic that surrounds the drum opening inside the machine. Look at the inner face of this ring, particularly on the left side (roughly 8-to-10-o'clock position as you face the machine). On GFW850, GFW650, and GFW550 series, this is the standard location.

If the door ring label is worn or absent, check the inner rim of the door itself — on some GFW models, a secondary label is on the door's interior face, along the edge near the hinge. The heat and humidity environment inside the door ring degrades adhesive faster than anywhere else on a washer; if the label appears blank, try photographing it with a phone camera and adjusting contrast — partial printing often survives.

Top-load washers (GTW series, PTW Profile)

Open the lid of the top-load washer. On most GTW series models (GTW330, GTW460, GTW485, GTW685, GTW750), the label is under the lid, near the right-side hinge — lift the lid and look at the underside of the lid near where the right hinge attaches. This is the most common location per GE's official model/serial documentation.

Two secondary locations worth checking if the lid underside is bare: the exterior back of the control panel (the rear-facing surface of the control panel housing at the top of the machine), and the exterior bottom-left corner of the machine (underneath the front, accessible by tilting the machine slightly or crouching down). Unlike GE's front-load washers, the door jamb is not a primary label location on top-load models.

GE Dryers

GE dryer model number location is the most consistent of any GE appliance category. The rule is simple: open the dryer door and look inside the door frame.

On front-load dryers (GFD series, PFD Profile): open the dryer door and look at the painted metal or plastic frame that surrounds the drum opening. The label is typically on the left side of the door frame — the strip running along the left side of the opening as you face the machine — on GFD14, GFD28, and GFD55 series units. On some GFD models, it's on the right side instead; if you don't find it on the left, check the right before looking elsewhere.

On top-load dryers (GTD series): these are dryers with a lid that opens upward. Open the lid and look at the door jamb — the rim of the cabinet around the opening — same as a top-load washer. On GTD42, GTD45, and GTD65 series, the label is on the front portion of the jamb.

A note on GE laundry pairs: GE frequently sells matched washer-dryer pairs with coordinating model numbers (e.g., GFW650 + GFD65). Each machine carries its own label at its own standard location. Don't assume the washer and dryer will have the same label placement just because they're a matched pair — use the type-specific guidance above for each.

GE Ranges and Wall Ovens

Ranges have two primary label locations depending on model type, and knowing which to check first saves time.

Freestanding electric ranges (JB, JS series — e.g., JB645, JB735, JB860)

Open the oven door fully. The primary label location on GE freestanding electric ranges is the front face frame of the range body — the metal frame that surrounds the oven cavity opening, visible when the door swings open. Look at the left or right strip of this front frame. On JB series models, the right side of the frame is the most common position.

Secondary locations: behind the storage drawer (pull it out fully and check the frame inside the cavity), or under the left front surface unit on coil-burner models (lift the burner coil and drip pan to expose the label affixed to the cooktop underside). On lift-top electric ranges, hinge the cooktop up and look at the underside near the left front.

Freestanding gas ranges (JGB, JGBS series — e.g., JGB735, JGBS66) and slide-in gas (JGS, PGS, CGS)

GE gas ranges have a distinctive label placement shared by no other major brand: the primary location on most current freestanding gas models is behind the rear control panel. With the range pushed into position, reach behind the backsplash panel in the middle — there is a metal flag or tag attached to the back of the panel. Fold or rotate the flag upward to expose the model and serial number printed or stickered on its face. This fold-up tag is a GE-specific design and the reason many homeowners and even repair techs assume the label is missing.

If the rear-panel flag is not accessible (or the range is slide-in without a rear backsplash), open the oven door and check the front face frame of the oven opening — left or right side. Additional backup locations: behind the storage drawer at the base of the range, or on the left leg of the range behind the kick panel.

Slide-in and front-control ranges (JS, JGS, CSS, CGS, PHS, PGS series)

Slide-in ranges (no storage drawer) most commonly have the label on the oven door frame — open the oven door fully and check both the left and right interior trim strips. On Profile and Café slide-in models (CSS750, CGS700, PHS930, PGS950), the label may alternatively be on the left side panel of the range's exterior, behind the drawer or accessible from beside the unit.

Wall ovens (JT, JK, JTP, PT, CT, ZET Monogram series)

For built-in GE wall ovens, open the oven door fully. The label is on the front frame at the lower-left edge of the oven cavity opening — the metal border at the bottom-left corner of the oven opening, visible when the door is swung fully open. On single-wall ovens (JT3000, JT5000, JK3500 series), crouch down and look at the bottom-left area of the oven frame to find it.

On double-wall oven models, the label is on the lower oven's front frame at the lower-left corner, as this unit is more accessible than the upper oven whose frame may be near eye level or partially obscured. If neither frame shows a label, check the microwave-oven combination cavity if applicable — on combo units, look at the left side wall inside the microwave compartment, same as a standalone over-range microwave. Monogram wall ovens (ZET series) follow the same front-frame placement; on refrigerator column Monogram units, the label may also be behind the top service panel above the door.

GE Microwaves

GE microwave label location depends on whether the unit is an over-the-range installation or a countertop unit.

Over-the-range microwaves (JVM, JNM, PVM, CVM — e.g., JVM6175, JVM3160, JNM3163)

Open the microwave door. The label is on the left interior cavity wall — the left side surface inside the microwave compartment, visible when the door is open and you look to the left. On JVM and JNM series over-range microwaves, this is the standard position per GE's official model and serial locator guide. The label is typically at approximately eye level when the unit is installed above a range at standard height.

On older over-range models (pre-1982), the label was behind or underneath the unit — not accessible without physically removing the microwave from its mounting hardware. On post-1982 models through the current GE Profile and Café lines, the left cavity wall is reliable. If the left wall label is absent or unreadable, the secondary location is the rear exterior panel of the microwave (accessible only if the unit is unmounted).

Countertop microwaves (JEM, JES, PEB series)

For countertop models, the label is on the rear panel — the back surface of the unit facing the wall. To read it without moving a heavy countertop unit, a phone camera held behind the microwave or a mirror can reveal the model number without relocating the appliance. On smaller countertop models (JEM3072, JES1072, JES1145), a secondary label on the underside of the unit sometimes carries the model number — lift one side slightly to check.

Reading the GE Model Number

GE model numbers are structured codes, not random strings. Once you have it, you can extract meaningful information about the appliance type, brand tier, fuel type, capacity, and finish.

The trailing finish code at the end of GE model numbers is one of the most practically useful segments for parts ordering: SS = Stainless Steel, WW or WH = White, BK or KS = Black/Black Stainless, FS or NRS = Fingerprint-Resistant Stainless, MS = Matte Slate, MB = Matte Black. Different finish variants of the same model (e.g., JB655YKFS vs JB655YKWW) typically share all internal components — only exterior doors and handles differ by finish code.

The serial number is on the same label. GE serial numbers begin with two letters encoding the manufacture date: the first letter is the month (A=Jan, D=Feb, F=Mar, G=Apr, H=May, L=Jun, M=Jul, R=Aug, S=Sep, T=Oct, V=Nov, Z=Dec) and the second letter is the year on a 12-year repeating cycle (e.g., R = 1996, 2008, or 2020).
