Why You Need Your LG Model Number Right Now

CPSC recall notices don't list brand names and product descriptions — they list exact model number ranges and serial number windows. When an LG refrigerator compressor recall, a washing machine door-lock defect notice, or a dryer heating-element fire hazard surfaces, the only way to know whether your unit is affected is to read the model number off the label and match it against the recall bulletin.

The same is true for parts orders. Repair techs, inspectors, and warranty adjusters all need the model number before they can look up a wiring diagram, identify which door-seal part number fits, or run a warranty eligibility check. LG manufactures dozens of refrigerator configurations, four dishwasher series, two washer loading types, and multiple dryer fuel types — and components are not interchangeable across them.

The frustrating reality: LG puts its model number label inside the appliance on every product category. The label is never on the exterior, never behind a rear kickplate, and never printed on the front control panel. This guide tells you exactly where to look — by appliance type — so you can find it in under 60 seconds.

LG Refrigerators

LG offers more refrigerator configurations than any other appliance category — French door, side-by-side, bottom-freezer, and top-freezer — and the label location is consistent across all of them: inside the fresh food compartment, on the interior wall.

French-door and side-by-side models

Open the main refrigerator door. On the left-hand interior wall, near the top (typically just below the first shelf), you will find a white or silver adhesive label. On most French-door models (LRMVS, LRFXS, LFXS series), the label is on the upper-left wall. If you don't see it there immediately, check the upper-right wall — some configurations flip the label side.

On a minority of models (primarily older French-door units from 2015–2019), the label migrated to the crisper drawer area. Pull both crisper drawers fully out of their tracks. The label is either on the rear wall behind the drawers or on the drawer divider rail.

Bottom-freezer and top-freezer models

On bottom-freezer models (LBN, LRB series), open the refrigerator door and look at the left interior wall near the top. If it's not visible there, it may be affixed to the door jamb — the recessed edge you see when the door is swung fully open. The door jamb label is particularly common on older top-freezer models (LRT, LRTLS series), placed on the hinge side of the door frame.

Pro tip: label inside the freezer compartment

If you've checked the fresh food compartment and door jamb and still can't find the label, open the freezer door or drawer and check its ceiling or upper interior wall. Some dual-evaporator French-door models have a secondary label here. This secondary label is more durable (the freezer compartment's stable temperature preserves the adhesive and ink longer than the refrigerator side).

LG Dishwashers

LG dishwasher model number location is the most consistent of any appliance category: the label is always on the inner door panel. The key is understanding which edge of the panel to look at.

Open the dishwasher door completely flat (pull it down to horizontal). Turn your gaze to the bottom edge of the inner door panel — the narrow strip at the very bottom of the door facing outward toward you. The rating plate is positioned here so that it faces the tub when the door is closed, and faces outward when the door is open flat. It contains both the model number and serial number.

On models with a hidden or integrated control panel (LDF, LDFN, and LDT series), a secondary label sometimes appears on the underside of the control panel — look at the top edge of the door opening, along the frame, when the door is fully open. If the bottom-edge label is faded (common on units installed in hard-water areas where mineral splash degrades adhesive), this control-panel-edge label is often in better condition.

LG Washers

Front-load and top-load washers have different label locations — a detail that trips up repair techs who primarily work on one type.

Front-load washers (WM series)

Open the washer door. LG places the label on the front panel surrounding the drum opening, specifically on the inner face of the cabinet around the door seal. Look at the area just inside the circular drum opening — around the door-ring zone. The silver label is typically on the left side of the front panel as you face the machine, at roughly the 8-to-10-o'clock position of the opening. On some WM9000 and WM8000 series units, the label is affixed to the door itself, on the inner rim of the door glass frame.

If the label appears blank or unreadable (heat and humidity degrade labels here faster than anywhere else on a washer), use the serial number to find the model. Top-load washers (WT series)

Lift the lid. On the underside of the lid itself — the inner surface that faces down when the lid is open — you will find the model/serial label on most WT-series models. If it's not there, look at the upper rear cabinet wall just inside the lid opening: the flat wall you see when you open the lid and look toward the back of the machine.

LG Dryers

LG dryer model number location is the most consistent across the product line: open the dryer door and look at the right-hand side panel inside the door opening. On both electric (DLE-prefix) and gas (DLG-prefix) models, the label is affixed to the right interior frame edge — the narrow strip of painted metal or plastic that runs along the right side of the drum opening. The label faces you when you open the door.

On older LG dryers (pre-2014), some units had the label on the door itself — on the inner rim of the door frame, the surface that meets the drum opening when the door is closed. If you open the door and the right panel is bare, try the door inner rim before moving to the back of the unit.

LG also makes stacked laundry units (WKEx, WKGx series). On these combination washer-dryer units, the label is on the right-hand panel inside the door opening, same as a standalone dryer. For stacked pairs (separate washer and dryer units installed together), each machine carries its own label at its own standard location.

LG Ranges and Wall Ovens

Ranges have two common label locations depending on how the range is installed:

Freestanding and slide-in ranges (LRG, LRE, LSG, LSE series)

Open the oven door and look at the left side of the oven door frame — the interior trim panel on the left side, visible when the door is swung fully open. On most LG freestanding ranges, the label is here, at about eye level when you're crouching in front of an open oven door.

If the oven door frame is bare, open the storage or broiler drawer at the bottom of the range (pull it fully out). The model number label is on the front face of the drawer cavity — the wall you see when the drawer is fully extended — on many LRG and LRE models built since 2018.

Wall ovens (LWD, WCEP series)

For built-in LG wall ovens, open the oven door and check the left interior door frame. If the unit has a broiler drawer below the oven, that drawer face is a common secondary location. On double-oven models (double oven or oven + microwave combos), the label is typically on the lower oven's door frame, as the upper unit's frame may be obscured by the mounting cabinet.

Reading the LG Model Number

Once you have the model number, you can extract meaningful information from its structure. LG's model numbers are not random — they follow a consistent encoding logic across all product lines.

The trailing letter at the end of almost all LG model numbers indicates the finish or color: W = White, B = Black, S = Stainless Steel, V = PrintProof Stainless, P = Platinum Silver, K = Black Stainless. This is the most practically useful part of the model number for parts ordering — a door gasket sized for a stainless LRMVS3006S is the same part as for an LRMVS3006V (same model, different finish).

The serial number is on the same label and follows a different format: LG serial numbers begin with three digits where the first digit encodes the year and the next two digits encode the month of manufacture (e.g., a serial beginning with 309 was made in September 2013 — digit 3 = 2013, 09 = September). What to Do Once You Have the Model Number

With model number in hand, you can immediately:

• Check for open recalls: Visit the CPSC recall database or use ApplianceIQ's one-click recall check.
