Why You Need Your Maytag Model Number Right Now

Maytag is owned by Whirlpool Corporation, which acquired the brand in 2006. Two Maytag top-load washers that look identical on the outside — say, an MVW7232HW0 and an MVW7230HW0 — may carry different drive motor assemblies, control board revisions, and lid-lock configurations. The suffix digits are not cosmetic. A single wrong character in the model number routes a parts lookup to the wrong catalog, and the wrong part ships. Maytag Refrigerators

Maytag produces three refrigerator configurations in its current residential lineup: French-door (including bottom-freezer), top-freezer, and side-by-side. Label placement varies by type — knowing which configuration you have eliminates most of the searching.

French-door and bottom-freezer models (MFI, MBF, MFF, MFT series)

Open the left-hand door of a Maytag French-door refrigerator. On the upper-left interior wall of the fresh food compartment — the surface directly visible when the left door swings open, just below the top shelf bracket — you will find a white or silver adhesive rating plate. This placement is consistent across MFI2269FRZ, MFI2570FEZ, MFF2558FEZ, and MFT2778EEZ series models.

On bottom-freezer drawer models (MBF and MFT series where the freezer is a pull-out drawer below), the label is in the fresh food section above, not in the freezer drawer itself. Open the full-width refrigerator door and check the upper-left interior wall using the same technique. The freezer drawer does not carry a label.

If the upper-left wall is bare or the label is unreadable, the secondary location is the ceiling of the fresh food compartment — open the door and look straight up at the top interior surface, toward the front or center. A third backup is the upper-right interior wall.

Top-freezer models (MRT, MTB, MTF series)

Maytag top-freezer refrigerators are among the most common configurations in North American homes. Open the refrigerator door (the lower, fresh food section). The label is on the left interior wall of the fresh food compartment near the top of that section — the surface you face on the left when looking into the open refrigerator. On MRT118FFFH, MRT311FFFE, and MRT311FFFM series, this is the primary location.

The secondary location is the upper-right interior wall of the fresh food section. On some older MRT models (pre-2010), the label can also appear on the door jamb on the hinge side — the narrow strip visible when the door is swung fully open to 180 degrees.

Do not look in the freezer section at the top — the rating plate is always in the fresh food compartment on Maytag top-freezer models, regardless of model generation.

Side-by-side models (MSS, MSF series)

Open the refrigerator door (left side, fresh food section). The label on Maytag side-by-side units is on the right interior wall near the top of the fresh food section — the tall wall on the right side as you look into the open compartment, at approximately eye level. This applies to MSS25C4MGZ, MSS26C6MFZ, and MSF25C2EXF series models.

If the right interior wall is blank or degraded, pull both crisper drawers fully out and check the floor of the fresh food compartment. On some MSS models, a secondary label sits flat on the compartment floor, partially protected from moisture by the drawers above it. A backup location on very early Maytag side-by-side units is the left exterior side panel — a narrow surface accessible only by pulling the unit slightly away from surrounding cabinetry.

Maytag Dishwashers

The Maytag MDB series is Maytag's only dishwasher line, and every current MDB model places the label on the interior tub wall — not on the door panel. Open the dishwasher door completely, pulling it down to fully horizontal. Look at the left side wall of the tub interior — the tall vertical surface on the left as you face the open dishwasher compartment. The model and serial rating plate is affixed here, typically at approximately mid-height on the left tub wall. This placement is confirmed for MDB8989SHZ, MDB8959SKZ, MDB4949SDM, MDB4949SDZ, and MDB7959SKZ series in the official Maytag MDB Series Service Manual.

Dishwasher labels are the most vulnerable to degradation of any appliance type — steam, detergent residue, and heat cycling destroy adhesive and ink faster than in any other location. If the left tub wall label is blank to the naked eye, photograph it with your phone and boost the contrast and brightness controls significantly before concluding it is illegible. Partial printing survives under enhanced contrast far more often than it appears to.

If the left tub wall is completely unreadable, the secondary location is the top inner edge of the door panel — the narrow horizontal strip running along the inside top of the door, visible when the door is pulled fully down. On some older Maytag MDB models (pre-2015), a secondary label appears on the right tub wall, mirroring the left wall placement.

Maytag Ranges

Maytag produces freestanding and slide-in ranges in both gas (MGR, MGS) and electric (MER, MES) variants. Label location differs between the two configurations.

Freestanding gas and electric ranges (MGR, MER series)

On Maytag freestanding ranges that have a warming or storage drawer at the base, the primary label location is inside the drawer cavity. Pull the warming drawer or storage drawer fully out on its rails, or lift it out if it is a removable tray type. The model number label is on the metal frame visible inside the cavity — typically on the front face of the cavity frame, facing you when the drawer is fully extended or removed. This applies to MGR7825AZ, MGR6600FZ, MER8800FZ, MER8650FZ, and MER8700DZ series.

If the range has no storage drawer — some Maytag commercial-style freestanding ranges omit it — open the oven door and check the left or right trim strip of the oven door frame: the metal strips running along the sides of the oven cavity opening, visible with the door fully open. This is also the backup location when the drawer cavity label is absent or inaccessible.

Slide-in ranges (MGS, MES series)

Maytag slide-in ranges do not include a storage drawer, as they are designed to sit flush with adjacent cabinetry on both sides. The label on MGS6800FZ, MGS7800FZ, MES8800FZ, and MES8700DZ series is on the oven door frame: open the oven door fully and look at the left trim strip of the oven door frame — the painted metal border running along the left side of the oven cavity opening. If the left strip is blank, check the right strip.

A secondary location on Maytag slide-in ranges is the left exterior side panel — the narrow side surface facing the adjacent cabinet. Accessing it without moving the appliance requires a phone camera inserted along the gap between the range and the cabinet, or the range itself must be slid out slightly.

Maytag Washers

Maytag produces both top-load and front-load washers. Label placement differs between the two configurations — and the top-load placement is unique among the brands in this series of guides, because Maytag's MVW commercial-series top-load washers are a product category KitchenAid does not carry at all.

Top-load washers (MVW series)

Open the lid fully. The label on Maytag top-load washers is inside the lid frame — not on the drum itself, and not on the back of the machine. With the lid raised, look at the metal strip that borders the drum opening at the front of the machine (the strip running horizontally across the front of the opening when the lid is up). The label is on the front-left section of this strip — the segment on the left side of the drum opening as you face the machine. On MVW7232HW, MVW7230HW, MVW6230HW, MVW5035MW, and MVW5430MW series, this is the standard location.

Because Maytag top-load washers are subjected to high moisture and agitation vibration, the inner lid frame label can degrade faster than on dryers or ranges. If the label on the front-left strip is illegible, the secondary location is the exterior back panel of the washer — a secondary rating plate affixed to the back of the machine, accessible by pulling the unit away from the wall. Some MVW models also carry a partial label on the underside of the lid itself.

Front-load washers (MHW series)

Open the washer door. The label is on the door frame ring — the circular border of metal that surrounds the drum opening inside the machine body. Look at the inner face of this ring, particularly on the left side at approximately the 9-to-10-o'clock position as you face the machine. On MHW6630HW, MHW5630HW, MHW8630HC, and MHW3505FW series, this is the standard door-ring location.

Heat and moisture degrade the adhesive on door-ring labels faster than on any other location on a front-load washer — the seal between drum and door concentrates steam directly against the label. If the door-ring label is worn or absent, the secondary location is the inner rim of the door itself: the edge of the door frame on the hinge side, shielded from drum steam when the door is closed and therefore more likely to survive. The last-resort backup is the exterior back panel, accessible only by pulling the unit from the wall.

Maytag Dryers

Maytag electric dryers (MED series) and gas dryers (MGD series) follow the same label convention. Open the dryer door and look inside the door frame — the painted metal strip that surrounds the drum opening on the cabinet face.

The label is typically on the left side of the door frame strip as you face the machine. On MED6630HW, MED5030HW, MED7230HW, MGD6630HW, MGD5030HW, and MGD7230HW series, left-side placement is standard. On some MED and MGD models, the label appears on the right side of the door frame strip instead — if you don't find it on the left, check the right before looking elsewhere.

A secondary location is the inner rim of the dryer door itself — the edge running around the door's interior circumference. On older Maytag dryer models (pre-2008, particularly the Neptune series), the label sometimes appeared on the exterior back panel rather than inside the door frame; if you have a pre-2006 Maytag dryer, check the back panel first.

Maytag laundry pairs (matched MVW-MED or MHW-MED washer-dryer sets) always carry independent labels at their respective locations — the washer's label is on the lid frame or door ring, and the dryer's label is on the door frame strip. Never assume matched appliances share a label location.

Reading the Maytag Model Number

Maytag model numbers follow a structured format that encodes the appliance type, fuel source, configuration, capacity tier, design generation, and finish. Once you have the number, you can extract useful context without any lookup tool.

The design generation letter immediately before the finish code (A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, J in recent Maytag production) matters for parts orders. An MDB8989SHZ and an MDB8989FHZ may share the same external cabinet but carry different control board revisions, spray arm configurations, or pump assemblies. Always include the full model number — including the generation letter and the revision digit at the end of washer and dryer models (the trailing 0 or 1) — when ordering parts.

The finish code at the end of most Maytag model numbers: Z or FZ = Fingerprint-Resistant Stainless, W or WH = White, H = Heritage Stainless (brushed), V = Black, FV = Fingerprint-Resistant Black, BZ = Black Stainless, S = Stainless Steel. Different finish variants of the same model share all internal mechanical components — only exterior panels and handles differ by finish suffix.

The serial number is on the same label. For post-2006 Maytag appliances, the serial follows the Whirlpool-group encoding: the first character is a manufacturing plant or division code; on 9-digit serials, the second character encodes the production year; on 10-digit serials, the third character is the year letter. • Check for open recalls: Maytag has been named in recall notices covering dishwashers, ranges, washers, and refrigerators.
